Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
