Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
