RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
