Female Victim Knifed in Birmingham Bus Shelter Assault Succumbs to Injuries
A woman who was stabbed to her neck area during a random assault near a bus shelter in Birmingham has passed away, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, aged 34 years, came under attack in Smallbrook Queensway, just outside Bullring shopping complex, just prior to 9 PM GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
Djeison Rafael, 21, appeared before Birmingham court Monday morning, facing charges for the attack.
Originally charged of attempted murder but following the victim's passing charges were upgraded to include murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said officers would be around the city centre on Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.
Investigators are requesting any eyewitnesses who may have seen the accused, who is described as a Black British national, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, athletic shoes and rucksack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred outside the Bullring shopping centre, opposite primary access point to Birmingham New Street station.
Police said they classified it as a random violent act and Det Insp James Nix said efforts continue to determine the motive behind.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, employed in the vicinity, described the emergency response when she finished her work period at about 22:00 Friday night.
She characterized the location as extremely disorderly, adding that some of her colleagues heard a commotion around 9 PM.
"Many co-workers take public transport, take the tram... our security is compromised essentially, here in the city centre."
Another individual, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, said he came the city quite frequently to see his girlfriend who lives in the city, and was concerned about what had happened.
"It makes me worried about my partner," he said.
"She doesn't drive employed at major concert locations... considering a totally random act [happened], understandably, it's terrible."
