Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".
